Temporary Resident Visa with Work Permit in Mexico: Notes for Holders
With the intensification of nearshoring, an increasing number of Taiwanese individuals are being dispatched by companies to work in Mexico, holding temporary resident visas with work permits. However, this comes with a series of regulations that need to be followed to ensure a smooth and unobstructed stay in Mexico. Here, I will briefly share some points of attention for those holding temporary resident visas in Mexico in 2024, helping holders to better comply with the relevant regulations and create memorable experiences during their stay in Mexico.
Validity Period on Resident Card
The validity period of the temporary resident card in Mexico will directly affect your residential and employment status in the country. It is essential to promptly track the expiration date indicated on the front of the visa to ensure completing the necessary procedures within the specified timeframe.
Prepare for Renewal in Advance
It is strongly recommended to begin the renewal process within 90 days before the expiration of your temporary resident visa with work permits. This buffer period ensures that you have ample time to handle the necessary documents and avoid any unnecessary interruptions to your residency.
Always Carry Resident Card
Be sure to carry your temporary resident card with you at all times, not only within Mexico but also when entering or leaving Mexico. This is crucial evidence to ensure your legal status and is an essential document for your daily life.
Carry Two Documents when Entering or Departuring the Country: Passport and Resident Card
If you only enter and departure Mexico with a passport, you will be considered a tourist or business visa visitor, which may automatically invalidate your current residency status. To avoid this situation, it is essential to always carry a valid residency card and have a clear understanding of the relevant regulations.
Lost Resident Card Processing
If unfortunately, you lose your resident card, please notify the relevant authorities immediately to initiate the replacement process. It is important to note that if you lose or have your resident card stolen abroad, do not attempt to re-enter Mexico without the card to avoid unnecessary complications.
Departure Procedure
Every time you leave Mexico, be sure to go to the immigration counter inside the airport to present your resident card and obtain a stamp indicating the departure date. At the same time, make sure to inform the immigration officers that you are a temporary resident of Mexico, and proactively show your resident card to ensure a smooth departure.
Personal Information Update
Any updates to personal information, including address, name, marital status, nationality, or employer, must be reported to the National Institute of Migration (Instituto Nacional de Migración, INM) in Mexico within 90 days of the change. Failure to fulfill this obligation on time may result in the imposition of economic fines by the INM, ranging from approximately 2,000 to 10,000 Mexican pesos (3,600 to 18,000 Taiwanese dollars). This obligation applies to all temporary residents, including adults and minors.
